A message of care and concern regarding Monterey Park

Vice Provost for Student Affairs Susie Brubaker-Cole, Senior Associate Vice Provost and Dean of Students Mona Hicks, and Associate Vice Provost of Inclusion, Community and Integrative Learning Samuel Santos Jr. describe campus resources available to any student affected by this incident of gun violence.

Dear students,

We write to share a message of care and concern for students impacted by recent gun violence in Monterey Park, California. While this incident remains under investigation, we do know it occurred near a festival celebrating Lunar New Year, which should be a treasured time with family and friends. We grieve deeply for every life lost, and all who knew and loved these individuals.

Please keep in mind the campus resources ready and available to help those in need. Here is our comprehensive list of all student mental health and well-being resources. Our Dean of Students Office has been reaching out individually to students with home addresses in or near Monterey Park.

We know this moment may weigh heavily on Asian and Asian American students. The Asian American Activities Center (A³C) – a core community space offering ongoing support for students – partners with Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) to provide regular drop-in counseling hours. More information about A³C and its statement on this tragic incident are at a3c.stanford.edu.

As the week begins, we would like to express our gratitude to everyone who has been stepping up to help people here navigate such profound sorrow. We can all lend a hand by reaching out with care and kindness to friends, classmates, and colleagues in all the ways we each contribute to our university community.

Sincerely,

Susie Brubaker-Cole
Vice Provost for Student Affairs
