Science in aerospace age to be focus of seminars

STANFORD - "New Science and Technology in the Aerospace Age" is the topic of a public seminar series to be presented at 8 p.m. Thursdays this summer in Terman Auditorium.

In its 29th year, the series is co-sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, American Society for Engineering Education, and Stanford University's department of aeronautics and astronautics. Admission is free. One unit of credit is available to Stanford students.

Speakers include:

• June 25, David L. Freyberg, associate professor of civil engineering, Stanford, "Water for California - A Challenge."
• July 2, Joan Vernikos, acting associate director of the space research directorate and chief of life sciences, NASA-Ames Research Center, "Gravity Supply for Human Exploration Beyond Earth: How Much? How Often? How Long?"
• July 9, David Morrison, chief of space sciences, NASA- Ames, "Target Earth: Cosmic Impacts a Continuing Threat."
• July 16, John Billingham, chief of the Search for Extraterrestrial Life (SETI) Office, NASA-Ames, "SETI: The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligent Life."
• July 23, Robert H. Cannon Jr., Charles Lee Powell Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Stanford, "The Human/Robot Team in Space."
• July 30, Peter E. Friedland, chief of artificial intelligence, NASA-Ames, "Artificial Intelligence Research and Applications at NASA-Ames Research Center."
• Aug. 6, Richard S. Shevell, professor emeritus of aeronautics and astronautics, Stanford, "Air Transportation at the Turn of the 21st Century."
