Thomas Kane
KEITH DEVLIN, executive director of the Center for the Study of Language and Information and a consulting professor in the Mathematics Department, has been awarded the International Pythagoras Prize in Mathematics, in the category Best Expository Text in the Mathematical Sciences 2004, for the Italian translation of his book The Millennium Problems. The prize of 4,000 euros will be awarded this month at a ceremony in Crotone, Italy.
THOMAS KANE, professor emeritus of mechanical engineering, received the 2005 D'Alembert Award of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers for his contributions to the field of mechanics. Among his accomplishments, Kane devised a new method for formulating equations of motion that led to some of the world's most well-known dynamics software programs. The biennial award was presented at the fifth International Conference on Multibody Systems, Nonlinear Dynamics and Control held this September in Long Beach, Calif.
