Event explores women's health

Women's Health @ Stanford, a multidisciplinary initiative dedicated to promoting wellness and preventing illness in women, is celebrating National Women's Health Week with a series of free public events.

The event will kick off Saturday morning with a symposium on the prevention, screening and diagnosis of cancer. During the symposium at the Stanford Cancer Center, researchers will discuss breast imaging, menopausal hormones and cancer, ovarian cancer, lung cancer and colon and rectal cancers.

A "Common Ground" seminar May 12 will focus on issues of universal interest: heart disease prevention, menopause and medications, and exercise and osteoporosis. Other events include seminars on weight management and pregnancy and reproductive medicine.

National Women's Health Week, May 9-15, is a national effort led by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to raise awareness about manageable steps women can take to improve their health. May 10 has been designated as National Women's Check-Up Day, and Women's Health @ Stanford provides screenings guidelines on its new Web site, http://womenshealth.stanford.edu/patient_care/general_screening.html.
