Soy studies. Adults with elevated LDL cholesterol (160-220 mg/dL) are needed for a six-month study comparing the cholesterol-lowering effects of two soy beverages and low-fat milk. Eligible participants must not be on medication to lower cholesterol. Study benefits include free blood cholesterol results and nutritional analysis of dietary habits. Volunteers must be non-diabetic and nonsmokers. Participants will need to come to Stanford once a week.

In a second study, postmenopausal women on hormone therapy are sought for a five-month study on the possible protective effects of soy isoflavones on surrogate markers of breast cancer and bone loss. Eligible volunteers must not have a personal history of breast cancer or be on bone-altering medication. Participants will take a soy supplement for eight weeks and a placebo for eight weeks. Volunteers must come to Stanford every other week.
