Medical center people D. Craig Miller, MD, the Thelma and Henry Doelger Professor in Cardiovascular Surgery, was named an American Heart Association/American Stroke Association Distinguished Scientist. He and 14 others, including two winners of the Nobel prize in physiology or medicine, received the new award at the organization’s conference last November in Orlando, Fla. The designation is given to “prominent scientists whose contributions to research have advanced our understanding of cardiovascular disease and stroke.”David M. Gaba, MD, will receive the David M. Worthen Award for Academic Excellence from the Veterans Health Administration Office of Academic Affiliations. The Worthen award is the highest honor given by the VA for outstanding achievements in health education. Gaba, professor of anesthesia, was chosen for his accomplishments in medical simulation and its use in decision making and training in anesthesia crisis resource management. The awards ceremony takes place today at the Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System. Last year James L. Hallenbeck, MD, received the award, making this the second year in a row that VAPAHCS won the national honor. |
