New book chronicles popular program

A book documenting the history of the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program and profiling 16 of its participants is now available. Proceeds from the sales will fund student scholarships for the program.

"Healing Journeys — Teaching Medicine, Nurturing Hope" was written by program founder Marilyn Winkleby PhD, associate professor of medicine at the Stanford Prevention Research Center, and writer Julia Steele.

The program encourages low-income high school students to pursue studies in biomedical and behavioral sciences, increasing the number of health professionals in underserved communities.

The book profiles several of the more than 300 students who have participated in the five-week summer program since its inception in 1987. Stanford undergrads direct the program and faculty and medical students serve as mentors.

The book is available on the Stanford Prevention Research Center’s Web site at http://hprc.stanford.edu/store/.
