Stanford student tapped as George J. Mitchell scholar

Stanford junior class co-president Alex Bradford has been named a 2004-05 George J. Mitchell Scholar, one of only 12 students selected in a nationwide competition for a year of postgraduate study at universities in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Bradford, a human biology major, will study for a master's degree in globalization at Dublin City University in the fall. Bradford is set to graduate from Stanford a year early this spring.

Launched in 1998, the scholarship is administered by the U.S.--Ireland Alliance, a nonprofit organization based in Washington, D.C., and is named in honor of the U.S. senator who was instrumental in the Northern Ireland peace process. This year's competition had 245 applicants from 166 colleges and universities across the country.

Bradford is the second Stanford student selected for the Mitchell Scholarship in as many years. Stanford graduate Michael Osofsky is currently studying at Queen's University Belfast.
