Modernist studies journal wins award
The Council of Editors of Learned Journals has named Modernism/modernity, the official journal of the Modernist Studies Association, winner of the 2003 Phoenix Award for Significant Editorial Achievement.
The journal is co-edited by Stanford's Jeffrey Schnapp, the Rosina Pierotti Professor of Italian and a professor of comparative literature; Cassandra Laity, an assistant professor of English at Drew University (New Jersey); and Lawrence Rainey, a professor of English at the University of York (United Kingdom).
The Phoenix Award recognizes journals that have "launched an overall effort of revitalization or transformation." Modernism/modernity was cited for its new program of special issues and for its increased editorial attention to key concerns in modernist studies.
Schnapp has initiated a series of special issues, the first of which is titled "Archaeologies of the Modern" (January 2004), co-edited with Stanford classics Professor Michael Shanks and Matthew Tiews, a managing editor of the journal and doctoral student in comparative literature here. The issue features contributions from archaeologists and cultural historians on the role of archaeology in the modern cultural imaginary.
Modernism/modernity encourages an interdisciplinary approach to scholarship by linking music, architecture, the visual arts, literature, and social and intellectual history from 1860 to the present.
