New technology turns marine animals into ocean explorers
Satellite tags, computer chips and other new technologies are allowing marine scientists to observe the once-mysterious migrations of fish, mammals, birds and other sea creatures. At the 2004 annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Barbara A. Block, professor of biological sciences at Stanford, described how animals fitted with these remarkable devices are gathering data on sea temperature, currents, salinity and pressure that can be used by oceanographers worldwide.
