DAVID EPEL, the Jane and Marshall Steele Jr. Professor of Marine Sciences at Hopkins Marine Station, will be honored by California State University-Monterey Bay as one of nine Distinguished Fellows of Science and Technology at a ceremony at 6 p.m. today on the CSUMB campus in Seaside, Calif. Epel is being recognized for his research on ocean pollution and for creating an instructional website on sea urchin development in collaboration with faculty from CSUMB and Seaside High School.

JOHN BAUGH, professor of education and, by courtesy, of linguistics, has received the Pioneer of Fair Housing Award from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The award is given to people demonstrating a "long-term commitment and dedication to civil rights." Baugh received the award April 1 at a celebration in Mobile, Ala., marking the 36th anniversary of the signing of the federal Fair Housing Act. Baugh was honored for an ongoing project on linguistic profiling funded by the Ford Foundation that looks at linguistic discrimination against African Americans and Latinos in housing, employment and education.
