Solving problems with anthropology honored by award

Faculty members are invited to nominate students for the Robert Bayard Textor Award for Outstanding Creativity in Cultural and Social Anthropology. The endowed award honors Textor, a professor emeritus of anthropology, by recognizing the innovation and creativity he has encouraged in his teaching, research and writing.

The Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology offers the annual award, which includes a $500 prize, to a student who has shown outstanding creativity in the use of anthropological approaches to any significant problem. Any undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing, regardless of major or program of study, is eligible to be considered for the award.

Nominating faculty members should submit a brief memo by Friday, May 14, stating why the nominee is outstandingly creative in an anthropological sense and why the problem is significant. A nomination should include evidence of such creativity in the form of a research paper, essay, thesis or dissertation, research proposal, graphic or plastic model, computer program, analytical routine, film, multimedia presentation, etc.

Nominations should be sent to Robert B. Textor Creativity Award, c/o Professor Ian Hodder, Chair, Department of Cultural and Social Anthropology, mail code 2145, or by e-mail to donnaek@stanford.edu.

The award will be announced during the department's commencement ceremony on June 13. For more information, contact Donna Even-Kesef at donnaek@stanford.edu.
