Nursing
revisited in Lane exhibit
An unusual collection of artifacts highlighting the early history of Stanford's 79 years of nursing education is now on display at Lane Medical Library. The Stanford Nurse Alumnae Exhibit, which will remain open through National Nurses Week May 6-12, features photographs, a nurse's pin designed by Pauline Lane, a commencement booklet with handwritten notes by Lane, a silver tea service for patients in Lane Hospital and a nurse uniform dating from 1917. The Lane Hospital Training School for Nurses was inaugurated by Mrs. Lane in 1895 soon after the opening of Lane Hospital in San Francisco. The institution changed its name to Stanford University School of Nursing in 1912. In 1959, the school relocated to Palo Alto where it operated until closing its doors 15 years later. The show, organized by library archivist Heidi Heilemann, is on display on Lane Library's main floor and is open during regular library hours. Heilemann noted that despite closing 30 years ago, the school maintains an active alumnae association. For more information, visit http://lane.stanford.edu. |
